My Only Idea

You see, its Christmas time coming up in a few months, and my wife and I wanted to be prepared this year round. We wanted to make sure that we have all of our lists in place and that we can sort everyone’s present in time, without needing to make mad rushes in the middle of the night on Christmas eve to the nearest mall to get that gift for that weird aunty that we forgot about. I was thinking of gift ideas, and the best I could come up with was cookies in a jar. A special jar, with blackboard paint on the front and with a piece of chalk tied to it on a string. On the paint I’d write Merry Christmas. That’s my only idea. What do you think? I think it’s awesome.

businesses in Denmark are insured against fire and water damage restoration costs, It is apparent that the general population show a high degree of risk aversion. Part of this aversion can be attributed to financial lenders, since fire insurance of a building is often a prerequisite of a loan being made. The actual premium payments are not in themselves a national economic cost, since money is just transferred from the consumer to the insurance company.
Administration costs in connection with fire insurances do, however, comprise a real national economical cost, as there would be no use of resources if the population (and the lenders) had not shown risk aversion. Insurance usually covers a broad spread of occurrences, of which fire is one. This makes calculation of the fire-related administrative costs difficult. If the total premium repayments for fire losses (including short-circuits and fire loss of profit) are compared with total premium repayments, it can be shown that 36% of all premium repayments are related to fire losses.
Since fire losses only comprise 13% of all losses, it can be concluded that fire costs are relatively expensive. A certain correlation between fire size and administration costs is probable but has not been possible to
estimate. After consultation with the Danish Insurance Association, a conservative view has been taken, (i.e. It is assumed that administration costs are the same, whatever the size of the loss.) Fire administration costs are thus 13% of the total administration costs, which again are 26,6% of the premium income.
The Danish Financial Supervisory Authority annual reports contain general statistics on total premium income and claim payments for the insurance business. A more specific breakdown of loss type and size, used for calculation of the direct costs earlier in this report, is only available from Danish Insurance Association. Thus two different sets of figures are needed for calculating the administration costs, each worked out separately. The basic difference is that the Financial Supervisory Authority annual reports contain all losses, whereas Danish Insurance Association statistics only contain losses to buildings and contents. Since the Financial Supervisory Authority statistics for premium income will be used to describe administration costs, it is necessary to calculate how much of the premiums relate to buildings and contents. This relationship is known
from the compensation viewpoint and it is assumed that the same factor describes the relationship on the premium side.
Multiplication of this “buildings and contents factor” by the value of premium income gives an estimate of the value of premium income for cover of losses to buildings and contents. Costs in connection with administration of fire insurance are found by multiplying this value by the product. This can be seen by comparing the Danish market for loss of profit insurance with that of other comparable countries of 26.6% (administration costs as a proportion of total premium income) and 13% (the proportion of losses caused by fire).
